The making of A SUMMONS IN THE NIGHT...

Early on the writing process, writer and director Scott Ramsay took up residence in Room 8 at the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel, Cruden Bay, in the North-East of Scotland. It was to this room that Bram Stoker would come in the summers of the 1890s, to escape the hustle and bustle of London theatre life, and to find time to write.

Stoker would rise and stride for miles along the dramatic coastline every morning, returning to the hotel to sketch and write notes for his gothic stories. The treacherous rocks of the bay would inspire ‘The Mystery of the Sea’ and the idea of wraiths walking undead from the shipwrecks. The striking gorges and caves would inspire ‘The Watter’s Mou’ and tales of smuggling. And most famously, the breathtaking Slains Castle on the cliffs above the village would inspire Dracula’s Castle, including the octagonal room where Harker and Dracula first meet.

It is in this spot - 130 years on - the plot for a new show formed, and A SUMMONS IN THE NIGHT came to life...

This month you can see A Summons In the Night at St. Luke’s Church in Portsmouth - 3 October, Park Community Theatre in Havant - 11 October, Christ Church in Portsdown - 12 October, St. Faith’s Church in Gosport - 17 October, Buckland Community Centre in Portsmouth - 18 October, and Staggeringly Good Brewery in Portsmouth - 18 October.

Mary Rose Productions has a clear mission: to create theatre that is artistically focused, accessible, and rooted in the rich tradition of live performance. David Hare’s play Amy’s View is at the heart of this mission, addressing the question: Is theatre still relevant in today's society and culture?

Through their production of Amy’s View, Mary Rose Productions aims to spark a conversation about the value of live theatre in the modern world. The company hopes to inspire audiences not only to appreciate its importance but also to engage in the creation of theatre through its Dead Theatre Society project. This initiative brings together established creatives and emerging artists aged 14-23 to collaborate, share skills, and explore pathways into artistic careers.
