From The Heart

A ‘From the Heart’ Poetry Recital is the culmination of pledges made by local people of all ages and backgrounds to learn a poem off by heart and to recite it in front of an audience. The poem should be one that is in the public domain and not one’s own work.

‘From the Heart’ is a Tongues&Grooves initiative organised by poet Maggie Sawkins and co-hosted by natural voice practioner, Janet Ayers.

‘From the Heart’ has been a featured event in two past Portsmouth Bookfest programmes and is included in Bookfest2025. In September 2024 Maggie organised another ‘From the Heart’ recital at the Yarnival WordFest on the Isle of Wight. The event attracted 20 participants and a wide audience.
