Portsmouth Pupils Celebrate the Power of Reading at Spectacular Book Awards Ceremony
Hundreds of Year 5 pupils from across Portsmouth came together at the Kings Theatre on Wednesday 25 June to celebrate a shared love of reading at the annual Year 5 Book Awards. Organised by the Portsmouth School Library Service, the ceremony formed part of the wider In Our Words programme, a year-long celebration of the city’s literary and creative culture led by Portsmouth Creates.
This year saw an incredible 1,500+ votes cast by children from 21 local schools, with pupils enthusiastically championing their favourite reads. Author Mitch Johnson was announced as the winner for his gripping eco-thriller Toxic, which captivated readers with its fast-paced plot and important themes.
In addition to the book award, the event shone a spotlight on young people who champion reading in their schools. Diya from Ark Ayrton Primary Academy and Cooper from Penbridge School were celebrated as Reading Champions and received on-stage recognition from the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, and the Lady Mayoress.
Adult inspiration was also applauded. Mrs Churchill and Mrs Lammas from The Flying Bull Academy were named Inspiring Adults, nominated by pupils for their unwavering support of reading and creativity.
The event featured:
- A performance from pupils at St Swithun’s Catholic Primary School
- An original poem by students at Mayville High School, both inspired by Toxic
- A digital gallery of pupil artwork responding to the shortlisted books, with five students receiving special commendations
Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “Reading is one of the most powerful tools we can give our young people. It opens doors to imagination, learning, and opportunity. Events like the Portsmouth Book Awards not only celebrate the joy of reading but also highlight the incredible work happening in our schools to nurture creativity and confidence in every child.”
Gemma Nichols, CEO of Portsmouth Creates, added: “We’re proud to support this year’s Book Awards in Portsmouth, a celebration not only of outstanding literature but of the transformative power of reading. Through our In Our Words programme, we aim to champion accessibility, inspire young voices, and encourage a lifelong love of books. As a city, we must collectively work together to help raise literacy levels and inspire the next generation of thinkers, storytellers, and future leaders.”
As In Our Words continues through to March 2026, events like these highlight the creativity, confidence, and connection that storytelling brings to the heart of the city.
